Car Seats

There are hidden toxins all over, especially in things we don’t think about… like car seats. I don’t know about you, but our 11 month old has spent a lot of time in her car seat. I can’t tell you the amount of extra hours I have driven around because we went out to run a quick errand and she ended up falling asleep.

For the amount of time they spend there, you definitely want to consider a more toxic free option! Five major companies now offer toxic flame retardant-free car seats including Britax, Clek, Maxi-Cosi, Nuna, and UPPAbaby. Total of 16 car seat models are available without added harmful chemicals, while still meeting federal flammability standards. (1)

Exposures to toxic flame retardants have been associated with an array of harmful health impacts. “Car seats with added flame retardants put babies and young children in close contact with chemical additives, some of which are known to be carcinogens, hormone disruptors, and developmental toxicants,” explains Gillian Miller, Senior Scientist at the Ecology Center. “Babies are especially vulnerable to chemical-laden dust from products like car seats since their systems are still developing.” (1)

The five companies listed above (Britax, Clek, Maxi-Cosi, Nuna, and UPPAbaby) have developed children’s car seats that meet flammability standards without the use of added chemicals, by switching up material and design choices.1 We personally have the UPPAbaby brand stroller and car seat and are in love with It! It has been super easy to use, install, and I feel safe with her being in It! Plus, It is super sleek looking, so I feel posh while pushing her around in it.
