Chiropractic for Ear Infections
(For both prevention & treatment of otitis media)
Chiropractic care’s main goal is to create a healthy nervous system. A healthy nervous system will ensure that the immune system is functioning at its optimal potential.
A chiropractic approach to helping prevent and treat ear infections would be to remove something called subluxations (See chiropractic post) from the spine.
Vertebral subluxations at the level of the occipital and first four cervical vertebrae (the upper portion of your neck) can cause pressure and tension on the nerves that exit at those spinal levels, in addition to hypertonicity (tightness and over stimulation) of the muscles in that area. The nerves and muscles surrounding those spinal levels influence the Eustachian tube, and in turn, subluxations can affect the size of the Eustachian tube and, thus, prevent drainage. Specific, gentle adjustments in the upper cervical region can cause a relaxation of the musculature and allow the ears to drain naturally.
“A promising study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics indicates that there is a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections. 332 children with chronic ear infections participated in the study. Each child, ranging in age from 27 days to 5 years, was given a series of chiropractic adjustments. The results show that close to 80% of the children did not experience another ear infection within the six-month period following their initial visits.” 1
